serious talk

alright I've got no pictures tonight and no talk about food. In all seriousness I need your guys advice! I'm in serious pain. In all my years of playing volleyball and jumping and wearing and tearing on my body the worst injury I had was muscular instability in my shoulder which in other words meant I was too weak for the amout of balls I was hitting and needed to get stronger so my muscles would support my bones and they would stop moving around and pinching nerves. Fine. done and done. I fixed that
Now I've done this to myself and I don't know what to do. My legs hurt all the time. I didn't run Saturday or Sunday and I foamed rolled and stretched the crap out of my hips and legs and thought I was ready for a run today. I pushed myself hardcore on the treadmill this morning and now my legs are crazy in pain. But not the good bad like sore pain that you would want. This is the tight, sharp knives in my hips and hurt when I walk kind of pain and I don't know what it is. It's driving me crazy. I have a hard 10K on Saturday night with a lot of hills, a half marathon in September and I'm supposed to be running the Disney Marathon in January! All this pain came out of nowhere and it's SO frustrating because all I need to do is run and my legs are screaming at me. I feel like I shouldn't have signed up for these races and I don't know what's going to happen with my legs. In my hips it feels like sharp tight pains and I try foam rolling them everyday and night but nothing is working. What do I do?! IF you were me what would you do. I don't have great health insurance and I'm afraid going to the doctor won't get covered. And what if the doc told me no exercise.. I would freak out. I just don't know what to do and I hate that my body doesn't feel 100% it barely even feels 50%. I'm just so frustrated and mad and stressed with myself and I feel so bogged down. You know when you just know something is not right with your body.. well that's how I'm feeling. It sucks. Has anyone ever had this kind of pain in your hips or legs?? Ugh I need some adviceeee

I dont really have the answers but definitey give your body at least SOME rest. Dont force it to do anythng. Even wth crappy insurance (which I have) basic doctor visits are usually covered with a copay. I would find someone youre comfortable seeing and then make a quick call to make sure the visit is covered. Seeing someone should definitely be done though! Sorry for the pain girl!

Man, I wish I had some advice for you. From what I've seen on other blogs, cross training (biking, swimming, even yoga) is a beautiful thing. Caitlin at the Healthy Tipping Point and Jenna at Eat, Live, Run have both had running problems, maybe look through their archives for some ideas. I would definitely check in with the doctor though, he probably won't tell you not to exercise at all, but will give you recommendations on what to do so you don't injure yourself more. It will suck to hear that you have to put off training for a while, but it's better to know sooner than later so if you can continue preparing for the marathon, you can do it as soon as possible.

hey girl i am sooo sorry to hear about this! how long has the pain been going on?? i would say give it a little whie and lay off the running and see if it gets better then i would def suggest u see a doctor even though its rough... it could be something easy even like a vitamin deficiency or just from overduing it that ur body needs to heal and maybe u just need to stop high impact running and try something else for a little while to let yourself heal. im really sorry to hear all of this and I hope u heal quickly!

I'm really sorry to hear about your legs! I REALLY think you should give yourself some serious rest. If you can maybe hot tub it or just take a warm bath to let your muscles relax. Are you taking vitamins? How's your vitamin D intake? (I've heard that a lack of D can cause muscle pain).

Hope you get some answers soon - BIG HUGS!!

I agree with everyone else--REST!

Then I would look into yoga. Seriously nothing takes my pain away faster than 20-30 minutes of GENTLE HATHA yoga. Take a look around the yogadownload.com website.

I hope you feel better!! I have felt super super sore and dragging and I found that lots of protein REALLY helps (as does bananas). Let us know what happens girl!!

Hey girl,

I showed this to my mom who's a doctor (general practice), and this is what she said:

"Have Julie check webmd.com for muscle strain, also check the low back pain and lumbar spinal stenosis sections (she could go through symptom checker and be sure to check out some of the "what else could it be" things.

Most likely she has significant muscle strain, but she needs to be sure that is not a low back/nerve component. If it seems to check out as muscle, she should check something like sportsinjuryclinic.net for localizing the muscle groups affected and info on self-treatment and stretches.

Most likely, she will need to do some resting, but september should be doable. She may need to skip this weekend, but first she should try and figure some things out."

Ok, I hope that helped a little? I've struggled with sports injuries before, and I know they are SO frustrating. It feels like you're at war against your body. Good luck, and I hope you can figure some of this out!

First off Julie, DON'T FREAK OUT! It sounds like you've been pushing yourself too hard lately. With the stress of your upcoming marathons, I know you've been exercising and working out and trying to ignore the pain, and THAT'S NOT GOOD! Here's what I'd do... you said you don't have great health insurance, but usually a consultation doesn't cost much more than a office visit. Give it ONE week and DON'T PUSH YOURSELF!!! Take it easy, go for walks instead of runs, ice your legs, and listen to your body. If it is still bothering you in one week, SEE A DOCTOR! Although the chance is slim, what if you are doing major damage to your body by over-exercising and not getting treated for whatever is up with your legs? Are you willing to risk a LIFETIME of running for forking over a little extra cash to see a doctor? Not a good idea! Keep things in perspective and listen to what your body is telling you. I sincerely hope the pain goes away after you take some time to relax, but don't hesitate to see a doctor if nothing changes.

Sounds like it might be your IT Band/Bands. After my first half marathon I ended up in physical therapy. I thought it was my IT Band, but it was just my hips having shooting pains and constant soreness. I needed to build up strength and develop better stretching habits. Only on 10 occasions did I get stabbing pain though, so I am leaning towards telling you it's your IT Bands. Get it checked out asap... Runnersworld.com has some great info on stretching and injury trouble shooting. See what they say about IT Band injuries and if it fits what you are feeling.

oh my gosh i'm so so sorry to hear about all your pain Jules. You don't deserve it but ahhh all that high-impact exercise is takin' a huge toll on your body.

Though I can't say i'm super qualified with treating injuries, I hope you try massage therapy and alternative medicine! Stay off those painful limbs and do some swimming to keep in shape, but lay off those injuries!!!

Take care of yourself better girl!! You need to rest up or the injuries will cause you some SERIOUS permanent damage in the long run! Good luck Jules...and keep us posted/updated on developments ok?!?!

i've gone through a whole host of leg pains in the last year, so feel free to email me and I can try to help you pin point it!!

one of the easiest ways that many of us have found to correct issues is actually a really good chiro who does a little deep tissue work. And strengthening exercises for sure!

So pinpoint where it hurts? When it hurts (only after working out, all the time)? On a scale of 1-10... hoe I can help if you'd like

I wonder if you've hurt one particular part of your legs causing an imbalance everywhere else!

I know I've had my most intense pain when experiencing IT band issues.

Do you have an appointment with a Dr.? I hope you get better soon!!!!!!! :o(

I haven't had this kind of pain, but I would take it easy, and cut back to walking until your legs feel better. If they didn't after a few weeks, I would consider a doctor, even though it ma be expensive :(

Aww, I'm sorry your legs are hurting! It's no fun and definitely frustrating. I agree with everyone else on the rest thing. It's so hard to do, but it's the best thing to do. Pain is your body's way of telling you something is wrong, so you should def listen and take it easy for a while.

Feel better soon! Keep us posted!
