Chicago food is great AND fun, don't get me wrong. But Chicago things to do? even funner.
Friday we were amped. Our flight was scheduled to leave at 4:30 and arrive around 6 in Chicago. Already loved that we would be getting there just in time for dinner.
See our excitement.
NOT so exciting when the airport shutdown for 2 hours and we were stuck on the runway. I did get to catch up on missed episodes of Top Chef and eventually we were on our way
Chicago here we come!
Friday night was nothing great. WAIT I lied. Friday night the sushi was amazing but by the time we were done eating and the weather turned sour, we decided to pack it in for the night so we could put our game faces on for the rest of the weekend.
Traveling is exhausting!
Saturday we woke up, got to the gym, slammed down some kashi bars and free Starbreezies and headed out for our "scheduled" 10:30 Lakeshore Bike Tour starting at Millenium Park.
We finally arrive at our destination spot, only to find out that the bike tour had left a half hour ago. Our confirmation page from online was wrong and we had missed the tour by a half hour. The people were nice about it and just let us take the bikes out ourselves telling us "it's simple! just follow the yellow bike path"
We were ready.
Did I mention I forgot how to ride a bike?
I won't lie. This cheese was killer. And the "yellow path?" Not so clear. We rode our bikes around for what seemed like forever, saw an old man fall off a segway, I had a speed biker push me up a hill in the Pedestrian Walking Bridge and finally found the yellow bike path.
Damn you bike path.
By the time we found the hidden path we were exhausted half way through. Biking is a killer. So we pulled over enjoyed the glorious lake view and turned around.
Biking in the wind = NOT fun.
We kissed the ground when we got back and sprinted to find some toilets and a seat. It just so happened that the toilet bowl was a seat and I enjoyed being on solid ground.
We passed through the pavillion
And spotted some free ballernia practice and decided to rest our jello like legs and enjoy the show
A few diva ballernias and a growling stomach later, we decided it was time to "walk the mile" up to lunch.
The walk up Millenium Mile was gorgeous. Especially the view of the river. We saw LOTS of Starbucks, a bunch of fancy stores, two tall people with pitchforks and a whole lot of kids running around on a city wide scavenger hunt
FINALLY we made it to the top of the mile and enjoyed our lunch at Foodlife. One thing I noticed about Chicago is that everyone thinks that things are a lot futher then they really are, walking distance wise. Maybe it's just me being a snotty New Yorker, but I'm so used to scaling New York City that when people said that we should take a cab up to Foodlife, it just didn't register.
We made it an enjoyed our food. After lunch we walked around, went in and out of some shops and explored the city more.
I felt home.
After dinner, we had a NYer fail and decided that the distance from Hub51 to Second City wouldn't be that far. 20 minutes! Someone told us. FAIL. An HOUR later we had scaled the city in high heels and had sat down to catch the Improv show at Second City
After the show which was soso we met some new friends and some super fun eye candy and got a looksies at the Chi nightlife. They treated us to drinks across the street and gave us the juice on Chi while we shared our cawfee tawlk New York style.
We got back to the hotel at 2:30 with only 6 hours until our 8AM scheduled boat tour.
We debated not getting up but this would have been a HUGE fail because the Architectural Boat Tour was amazing.
Opening the gates to Lake MichiganNavy Pier. never actually went inside but the view from our bikes and the boat was cool.
gawjuss right!? 8AM still and silent on the lake was glorious. TOTALLY worth waking up :)
The Planetarium my FAVORITE building.
Double fistin Starbreeezises. one of the best parts of the tour was the free and unlimited Starbucks coffee :)
Back UP the river.
Thumbs DOWN for the bike tours.Thumbs UP for Dick's Last Resort.
When the boat tour was over we were ready to explore Millenium Park on foot.
We found good solid metal food.
And played around with fun architecture :)don't play with your food..
And ran a muck in CHI. . .
Chicago was our playground. woo hoo!
After we played around in Chicago for the afternoon we headed back to our hotel to check out, grab our luggage and then head over to the Wicker Park area.
Because lugging your luggage around Wicker Park for an entire afternoon is always a good idea..
Vacationing is exhausting and Sunday afternoon we were finally at our wits end. After spending a few hours in Wicker Park and getting tired of explaining to people WHY we were carrying luggage around town, we headed back to the airport.
Blue Line and all we said Peace Out to Chicago and promised to be back again.
Afterall I DO have to go back and find my husband..
