an ode to food preppers

does anyone else out there ever feel like they spend more time preparing their food then actually eating it?

the other night (sunday night) it’s 6pm and i’m in the kitchen chopping away. i felt like veggies were flying everywhere and with the time spent cutting veggies and cooking tilapia you would think i’d have come out with some honkin 5 star dinner.

nerp. i came up with a bowl of shiznaz all glopped up

now don’t get me wrong i thought it was 5 star. but it was a lot of work!

maybe 20 minutes after i digested dinner i was back in the kitchen prepping my food for the next day.

breakfast? check!

lunch? check!

deej: “what the heck are you doing up there!”

julie": “makin breakfast ma!”

van: “were you not just in here making dinner…”

julie: “well now i’m making breakfast. can i interest you in french toast while i’m here..maybe some eggs benedict..?”

and by the time i was done gathering my food and chip chopping away well it was time for bed.

now. i’m not complaining. well maybe i am. but i’m just sayin that it' takes alot of work to prep food for my meals. and sometimes just sometimes i wish it didn’t take so long.

mocha cookie dough oats: 1 1/3c decaf coffee, 1/8c egg whites, 1/3c oatbran, cin+stiv, archer’s farm s/f caramel syrup, 1 6oz plain chobani & sprinkle of xanthum gum. overnight & added en route to work with 1/2 scoop gnc cookies n cream protein powder

for the record xanthum gum in overnight cookie dough oats makes them extra cookie dough like.

a-may.ze.

is it worth it?

oh. totally.

but for anyone out there who thinks that losing weight is hard, well just wait until you try and maintain.

can i get an amen to maintaining equals constant maintenance?

P4113837 P4113847 P4113848

so by the time i got home from work last night now granted i had an hour and a half commute to come up with some 10 course piece de resistance for dinner i still couldn’t decide what in derek jeter’s name i wanted for dinner.

i knew one thing. 8oz of mushrooms was for sure going to be on the menu.

well mainly because they were already sliced. thank you very much king kullen.

so you’re probably waiting on the edge of your seat in anticipation of what this iron chef came up with?

P4123852 P4123853

5 egg white omlette with cinnamon, cream of tartar and stevia +1/4c pumpkin & 1/4c-ish cottage cheese, 2tbsp hummus, april’s low carb soy muffin & steamed veggies in ridiculous amounts of noochishticity

believe it or not. this plate made for a goddess took a good half hour to create

worth every second spent over the frying pan and microwave? you bet your bottom dollar.

but not more then 20 minutes later i found myself slaving over the blender simply for a batch of protein ice cream

P4123855 P4123856

call me crazy but sometimes i think i spend more time in the kitchen then any other room in my house

it brings me back to the time pre weight loss, pre blogging, pre health fanatic & all things clean and fresh and green. and i think about the amount of work i didn’t put in and how in the world i just went places without prepping food and flying by the seat of my pants and i think about all of the people who go to work not knowing what they’re going to have for lunch or dinner or caring about the double twix and snickers that end up being their breakfast, lunch & dinner.

and then i think..actually i know it’s worth it.

and i might be crazy.

and this morning i might have been lazy

P4123857 P4123859 P4123861

and you may call me a rat or a bitch or a judgemental snot. but to me it doesn’t matter. i like prepping my food, i like knowing what i’m eating is good for my body and my soul. and yes it’s tiring and yes sometimes it drives me up a wall but knowing what i’m putting in my mouth is wholesome and greensome and good for you makes it all worth it to me.

so for everyone out there who is struggling with maintenance or thinking that once you reach your “goal weight” it just gets easier..

well the straight truth is that once “you get there” wherever “there” may be, well that’s when it gets hard.

and by hard, i mean fun and delicious, and makes you feel good about yourself.

because when you unwrap your freshly made turkey sandwich which is oozing with laughing cow & health joy and your co worker or friend or random person on the street is unwrapping their freshly made arby’s bacon cheddar heart attack in a paper wrapper quarter pounder at least you can feel good about the maple syrup you had on your pancakes last sunday instead of the corn syrup in their ten thousand pounder.

so all of you food preppers out there give yourselves a hug today. because i for one think your awesome. i understand the work you put in. i recognize your effort. i’m with you in the kitchen late at night, early in the morning, mid-day. i understand your sometimes stress and i think you’re amaze-a-balls for all the work you put in.

::high five and hugs::

so with that being said i’m off to my home away from home to do none other then make tonight’s dinner, tomorrow’s breakfast, lunch & dinner.

i’m sure by the time i’m done it’ll be time to make today’s lunch and then probably next november’s thanksgiving day turkey.

worth it? totally.

call me crazy go ‘head i’m sure plenty of people out there will, have, or are going to. but i. don’t care. ;)

oh. have you entered for some vitas yet? time’s a tickin! you got till wednesday!

question! love me or hate me? food preppers or fly-by-the-seat-of-your-panters give me your thoughts, vent here, etc!

  3. I'm a full blown food prepper myself! Your right it's all worth it! Where do you get xantham gum at and what all do you use it in. What does it do, flavor, texture? I'm a xantham gum virgin, please explain. Thanks! Julie from Texas

  4. i totally agree with you, i spend more time in the kitchen than any other room and ALWAYS prepare my food in advance!! and then when i see people at work eating the most ridiculous foods I am so happy with my sandwich thin, tofu hummus and salad!! you go girl!

my dad always used to pick on me...he would always be like "CHOP CHOP CHOP...its that time of the night!" haha

maintaince IS hard you gotta stick with it, but as long as you have taht healthy balance of workout and keep brining your food, its a reality!!

im giving you a virtual high 5 for being a food prepper!!

  5. oh heck yah! I spend soooooo much time in the kitchen. And not only am I prepping all of my delicious eats, but Josh's too! Some nights, when he had class, I'm packing him lunch & dinner and laying out stuff for his breakfast! Craziness...but so worth it :) I'm thinking eggs may be on the menu tonight!!

  6. Oh man...sometimes I get so annoyed when a dish takes longer to cook than I want it to and I'm super hungry! If you ever want a break from the madness, try Amy's burritos! They're quick and awesome!
    Have a great day, girl!

  7. Ha! I could have written this exact post (minus the sharp wit)... I spend a TON of time prepping food, I was just talking to the hubs about it this weekend - what the hell did I do with all that time before when I didn't do any prep? Oh yeah I sat on my fat ass snacking and watching 6 hours of TV a night. My buff arms and glimmer of a 6-pack make me much happier than those hours of trash TV ever did :)

The hubs is not such a fan of the constant cleaning up after me though, the dishes never end he says!

I'm just getting into maintanence territory and it's actually fun because I've got to up my calories to pack on some muscle, plus I've discovered the food/fitness blog world and now have tons of healthy stuff to experiment with (ahem, prepping mocha cookie dough oats tonight!) Sadly it seems for the past year or so I was cheating myself out of hundreds of delicious calories. Le sigh.

  8. i totally share your pain. these days I do big batches in the kitchen so i can have some time away from the kitchen.
But if im slaving away cooking dinner, i multi task and prep lunch and breakfast for hte next day. That way when dinner is ready, lunch and brekkie are already packed... all i have to do is eat and do the dishes... and dont even get me started on those EFFN dishes! ugh!

  9. Prepping food may be a pain, but having fresh yummy eats on hand is SO WORTH IT.

I'm at the bottom of my wheat puffs bag : ( I know you understand what that feels like.

  10. I totally agree! I pack all my food..there's no way I'm giving into fast food!

  11. It's a pain to prep, but worth it! I hate when I am somewhere and don't have food planned and am stuck at some crappy restaurant trying to figure out the best thing for me. It is so worth it to prep.

  12. AMEN SISTA! Maintenance IS harder than losing weight!

This morning I was making lunch and breakfast at the same time and basically running around like a chicken with its head cut off but it IS worth it! and yea I don't get those people who say to take 20 minutes to eat your food...I am usually done in 5! ha

    ReplyDelete
  13. i dont mind it if i get the prep out of the way all at once. i try to do mayj chopping and stuff before my work streaks to minimize it when im pressed for time (read: when im starving and need food stat).

  14. Amen, girl...preaching to the converted. I make pretty much all of my meals a day in advance- yeah, it can be a pain, but the good feeling of knowing that I have exactly what I want/need ready-to-go when mealtimes roll around is worth it. Most of the time. Hehe. Though Amy's meals come in handy on occasion... ;)

  15. Amen!!!!!

Maintenece is a pain. And hard. Seriously, just reading your thanks and high five.... Means a lot to me even though we are total strangers :) so thanks for that. I'm a mom if 3 and a wife trying to feed my whole family clean in addition to myself, maintaining my loss and stuff, so I totally feel your pain times like 3 LOL.

Must try xantham in oats - do you precook the oats with ur water or whatever he night before an eat cold in the am? I've been thinking about doing that for summer as it warms up. Does xanth ever give u the tummy gurgles?

  16. When I was working I definitely prepped meals the night before for all of my snacks/lunches and then it would always take awhile morning and night for bfast and dinner. I don't have to prep so much anymore because I stay home, but I still take time to be sure I am making quality things.

And sooooo true that maintenance is the hardest!

    ReplyDelete
  17. A-FREAKING-MEN, sister!!! My roomies must think I'm nuts for spending so much time slicing, dicing, steaming, stirring and the like, but in the end, when I have my salad beast or perfect oats in front of me, I'd always rather have that then the Pop-Tarts that are convenient. The only time I get frustrated is when I dream up a concoction in my head and it doesn't taste as good as I'd hoped!!

Hope you're having a great Tuesday!!

  18. hahah I'm definitely a pant flyer...if that's what it's called. THough sometimes on sunday afternoons, i get into the chopping mood and literally stand there prepping, baking, stir-frying for 3 hours just to have lunches for 3 days of the week. Most of the time though...i'm a...Open the fridge and Hmmmmmmmmm person.

GOSH that looks like a hearty bowl of protein ice-cream...I could go for some now Julz....

  19. dude, ditto. I feel like I spend 99% of my day prepping food. Suppose that's the price I pay for being such a food diva and eating such complicated meals.

hugs and kisses to you jay jay bear!

  20. There's a lot of truth in this post--I definitely spend more time making my food than eating it. Whether it's because my meals are elaborate (hardly) or I eat ridiculously fast (totally), we'll never know...

  21. I feel like I spend more time thinking about food than eating it! I am quick prep person.

  22. I am a high raw vegan who doesnt eat gluten and limits soy. Therefore, if I dont make it in my own kitch, I dont eat. And then i multiply that by 3 for my family to eat. They dont have the restrictions i do but i also try not to cook 3 sep meals, 3x/day. I try to cook us all something similar with mine being the pickiest/most restrictive. When i stopped eating my allergens, I replaced a life spent in the bathroom with a life in the kitch. The first life sucked and the 2nd life is much better and more fun. Amen to food prep. It just is what it is. I would rather do it and live healthy than make myself sick and tired and wonder what nasty-ness lurks in the food i ingest if i dont make it myself. great post girl!

  23. Maintaining is FOR SURE harder than losing weight. Because losing weight is a finite process. It comes with an endpoint and a set of instructions. Maintenance is for life and it's so very touch-and-go. I spend so much time in the kitchen both cooking and cleaning up the tornado that I leave in my wake. It's rough. but totally worth it. Plus it keeps me from doing boring things like studying.

    ReplyDelete
  24. You're so funny Julie. Ok, I am definitely a little bit of both. In other words, I do a LOT of prepping, but at the same time, there are plenty of times when I go into the fridge and just grab stuff and throw it together. Of course, the reason I CAN do that is because I prep veggies, fruit, and protein ahead of time....so....I guess I AM a prepper! I try not to spend too much time in the kitchen because my life is already revolved around food as my profession, so I try to make it revolve around other things in real life. Like.....my computer, lol. I'm such a dork.

  25. Food prepping takes so much time, I hear ya! I try to spend a few hours on Sunday prepping for the week and know if makes loads of a difference... it just takes so long!

    ReplyDelete
  26. How did you get a copy of my schedule? I'm the same way, lady. I TRY to make lunch while I'm making dinner, but usually I'm too zonked from work that I just want to stare off into space while I stand over the stove. So I usually wait until after dessert (another process) at which point I'm about to crash into bed. Life is hard.

    ReplyDelete
  27. AMEN SISTER! lol. Losing weight isn't hard- it's maintaining a lifestyle DAY.after.DA AFTER DAY for the rest of your life.... That didn't sound to optimistic, did it?

    ReplyDelete
  28. I definitely spend a lot of time prepping/preparing food - especially when you add in plating & photoing.
Half the time I wrap up the food to take with me after I photo it on a pretty plate!

    ReplyDelete
  29. you crack me up !!

Some days I feel like that's all i did was create/ find recipes, going ot the store... or two lol, prep... then cook... For THREE meals a day. But I love it ;)

    ReplyDelete
  30. That is why I hate cooking...I like to eat FAST. When I cook I just eat everything as I prep haha!

  31. OMG I love this post. It goes right along with everything I have learned the past year and have been sharing with my readers....losing weight ain't easy and IT DOESN'T STOP WHEN YOU GET THERE! Amen girl! amen!! I'm putting a link up to this post on my blog today! You rock. Totally.

  34. Thanks to Kelly O for linking me here (now added to my reader!).

This post was so RIGHT ON. This morning, since I was gone all day yesterday, I was cooking chicken, cooking my eggs and oats and bagging green beans, all while getting ready for work. Was it a total P.I.T.A.?! Yes! Was I late for work? Yes! Was it worth it knowing exactly what I'm putting in my body. YES!

  35. I stinkin' love this post! Sometimes I think the way I eat can be downright exhausting! Seriously having to bring 2 snacks, coffee, lunch, etc to work with me everyday takes so much friggin effort. But you are right. It is worth it! Despite how ever many times a coworker has passed my desk as I'm enjoying lunch and asked, "eww what are you eating?"

At least I don't shout back, "Ewww why is your gut folding over your pants?"
