a few weeks ago i was contacted by some lovely folks at the chef’s diet who wanted to know if i would be interested in giving a meal delivery program a go for a day
at first to be honest i hesitated because i’m always pretty skeptical when it comes to these things, the portion sizes, the taste, the quality. but then after a day of thought i figured, hey why not, let’s do it. let’s give it a try, especially since things are so busy at work it was nice to not think about food for one night after getting home from work
and there it was one evening when van got home from the pool (probably around 10P)
a lovely and pretty decent sized cooler, on my front stoop, all filled to the brim with meals for the next day
and a quite lovely attached menu as well
i was definitely intrigued by the contents of the bag, and wondered about the meals that were chosen for me
speaking of menu. when i was first contacted i was asked if i had any food preferences, allergies, avoidances, etc. i told them that i don’t really eat dairy, and workout a lot. they were super great about adhering to any kind of food concerns you may have
the menu for me included 3 meals (breakfast, lunch & dinner and two snacks, a mid afternoon snack and an evening snack)
i knew for me this would definitely not be enough food for one day for me. on the website they don’t give a definitive calorie number of what you’re eating but they say it’s aimed between 1300-1500, in addition to the meals i also had a pre breakfast breakfast (after the gym) and then added more fats to the main meals (like avocado or nuts), and added in another afternoon snack as well
the breakfast was an apricot oatmeal muffin with soy butter
i had already had a bigger breakfast post workout, so this was more of a snack between lunch and breakfast. to be honest it was really dry and kind of flavorless. and i was definitely glad that lunch was followed shortly after because it wasn’t too sustaining. i’m also unsure of where the soy butter was..
on the other hand, lunch was of epic deliciousness. i specifically remember that when i opened the cooler deej was way more excited about the lunch than i was. but the lunch was fan freaking tastic
on the menu was a large mixed greens salad topped with miso shrimp, and a black rice salad (which had seaweed salad in it!!) and a miso rice wine vinegar dressing
this was delicious. the shrimp were large and in charge, the black rice was great, and i was praying for it to never end
the rest of the days meals were just mediocre to be honest. the chicken croquettes were a weird texture and not as 'meaty’ as i was hoping for and the mushroom gravy was just not my cup of tea.
the dinner was tilapia with chimichurri sauce and boniato (whatever that was). the fish was dry and i had it on a salad, with the dressing, but there were i think potatoes in there that were hard and cold. i didn’t like that you have to reheat it because the potatoes already were chewy, and i think reheating it would have made them worse
the fish was good, but i think the best part was just having it made and ready for you
and finally the dessert was um interesting? i didn’t have a lot of it, and a taste was just enough. it was dry, no flavor and eh
all in all i think the food was just mediocre, i think it is a great option for people who find it hard to fit in time to make healthy meals ahead of time, and it was a nice relief to have everything prepared.
maybe some of the other meals are better tasting, and you just have to experiment with the plethora of options they have
what i do like about the program is that the food is fresh, delivered to your door right away, and there is a large selection of items on the menu, they are also great about pricing and working out potential payment options
thanks chefs diet!
cawfee tawk what are your thoughts on meal delivery services?
I love that you were blatantly HONEST about this delivery service, even when knowing they're totally going to read this! LOL. I find it actually VERY FUNNY TOO! I have never been one to ever even think about having a delivery service, I would far rather cook the foods I love in advance! :)
ReplyDeleteYah...im probably too picky to enjoy something like this, but i love the idea! Especially right now with the baby-itd be awesome to have my meals taken care of. Happy sunday!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat do you mean by "you don't really eat dinner"? I think I would prefer my own food over a delivery service! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThe idea seems great in theory, but I don’t think I could go the whole day with meals provided for me like that. I mean don’t get me wrong, I’ve been in a situation where I didn’t have complete control over what I was eating for the day, but there were always options so I could pick and choose.. Plus I could eat as much as I wanted. I would probably steer clear of a meal delivery because honestly I don’t think it would be any easier picking out a whole weeks worth of meals to be delivered, verses spending a bit of time to prep stuff for the week on your own.
ReplyDeleteInteresting review Julie. I love your honesty. I agree, if I were to ever do this (or recommend it to anyone) it would be solely for the convenience factor, and I Wouldn't expect everything to taste great. At least it was edible and somewhat tasty though, because many foods and services like this are CRAP! So, great review!
ReplyDeleteThanks for being honest! This is something I wold never be interested in for myself. That's only b/c I have so many food allergies that I wouldn't want to risk the chef making ingredient mistakes. Oddly enough, though, I have a small bakery business and do incorporate "real foods" into my menu. Info have 2 clients on a Friday pm dinner schedule.
ReplyDeleteHa, I was reading this mentally adding up all the calories! I'm so glad you added in extra snacks - that's my girl ;)
