well us golean ladies don’t participate in things unless we can make a ‘thing’ of it. okay a ‘thing’ of it if ya know what i mean
and although the pick-up ended up being a not-so-pick up, and more of a ‘drop-off’ of jenna’s city living needs (aka special k, raviolis, milk, a few text books & a partridge in a pear tree) we still made a lovely day of it
deej & i started bright and early, popped in the car and headed on it. texts galore we told jenna we were on our way.
our plans included lunch, a pop-up park, & a stroll around the city.
my rules were as followed: i don’t care what we do but please don’t take me through chinatown.
it’s not that i have anything against chinatown it’s just that it’s my least favorite part of the city. the people are too smushed together, everyone wants to sell you a fake handbag, and i just can’t handle it.
not a problem. the restaurant we were planning to wine & dine at was closer to the bowery.
phew! that was until we found out the were closed.
so where did we end up?
right smack dab in the middle of chinatown, the weekend of chinese new year.
year of the dragon!
oy. way to pick the weekend to battle the dragons.
as soon as the restaurant was closed, the only place we could think of was the best chinese food in town.
yep. you heard right. if you haven’t been to 17 wohop on mott street, then you ain’t know nuttin’ about chinese food.
deej & van have been going to wohop since they first started dating a long long LONG time ago (ha ha). so 17 wohop is pretty much in our blood.
it’s a down n’ dirty hole-in-the-wall type joint, where you usually have to wait on line outside to get a table. it kind of reminds me of the episode from sex & the city where carrie and big eat at that schezuan food place.
we got there just in the nick of time before the great lunch line formed, and we were seated and ready to go in no time flat.
uhhh i don’t know what i want. jen clearly didn’t have enough ‘joe that morning.
i on the other hand knew i wanted big. fat. shrimp.
so happy to be here!
we eventually rolled with wonton soup, steamed dumplings, i got shrimp & broccoli, & deej & jen got beef and broccoli
i’m not kidding, in the slightest bit when i say the food here is rockin’
bow chicka wow wow.
when are tummies were full, it was time to carry on our merry ways.
not without a happy new year photo & a stroll through little italy
(<---future apartment decor)
the thing about little italy, is that it’s a great place for single girls. you walk along the street and men pretty much beg you to come eat their pasta. i bet if you wanted them to they would get down on their knees and propose to you if you just come into their restaurant to eat their pasta.
it’s just a shame we already hit up wohop, or else i could have been married by now.
our main destination of the day was a free indoor pop-up park that i’ve seen/heard about several times in daily nyc emails.
it’s always intrigued me what it would be like so i suggested we pop over (ha ha).
located on mulburry street, it was designed as an indoor park in an art gallery, where free of charge you can literally go and hang out in the park all day long.
sounded intriguing so we decided to head on in.
at first i was actually surprised at how small it was, i guess i had expected it to be large and in charge and the size of a park.
that it was not. but it did have really adorable ‘vendor’s set up where you could purchase treats to snack on while you were lounging in the park
the gallery or ‘park’ was packed with all kinds of people. some families, a lot of teenagers lounging on giant bean bags, and some random hipster type people.
we found a free bench, and sat down to gossip, and people watch. because hello that’s what we do.
the park was actually really gorgeous. the artwork was spot-on and we thought it was a really cool idea. not necessarily something that i would frequent, but it was free, interesting and totally worth the pop-in.
it was also a really great place for teenagers who wouldn’t have anywhere to go during the day, to go & chill out with a group of friends. although the over sized bean bags just screamed bed bugs in my opinion.
plus there was free bird watching!
divaz in the park.
eventually we had enough of enough. and we were sick and tired of doing *free* things.
we stopped for a quick snack attack and coffee fuel at dean & delucas on broadway and then got down to business
so where did we end up?
danger in the house. banana’s 40% off sale quickly made my free day to a $30 splurge on a pair of leather oxford lace up booties i’ve been coveting since i saw them for full-price.
by the end of the day we were spent.
we concluded the day after i found my wedding venue, and then dropped jenna back off at her apartment.
deej & i found ourselves in coma-tose on the drive home and i’m pretty sure we both hit they hay at about 9:30.
phew. it’s been a week and i’m still recovering.
time to restock the fridge!
love to love you <3
cawfee tawk! have you ever visited nyc? if so, where are your favorite places you’ve been or you go to? restaurants, bars, site-seeing places, etc? or if you haven’t been where would you die to go to?
