about 2 weeks ago i thought i would experience my first “WOD” – the teacher at the crossfit box i was going to got sick & had to cancel the class – last week it didn’t work out & so this week the coach emailed me seeing if i was still interested in participating in a free trial workout
DUH. i of course had no problem jumping onto the crossfit bandwagon – the way i see it is – if there’s such a huge rave about it – then something must be good
the first thing i really liked about this box is that it’s about 8 minutes from my house – proximity is key especially if i’m working out before i go to work in the AM – which means i need to take travel time into consideration
the trial class went great – the class started at 9AM and there was about 10 people there – a few guys, a couple younger girls (mostly who just wanted “loose weight while they were home from college” – oy) and then me.
the coach went through the fundamentals of crossfit – the definition – what classes involved and what we could expect from being a part of the box, and participating in crossfit in general
he went over some of the standard crossfit ‘lingo’ – lucky for the blog world & my crazy crossfit friends – i knew all about what he was talking about
he explained that if we had a good time in the trial class/classes then the next step is to participate in the 6 class 1 1/2 hour fundamental training program which is mandatory to participating in the WODs and having a membership at this box
you can do the training program in group sessions (which start every couple of weeks) or on a private level – the training program is great because it shows that the coaches are adamant about learning proper technique before participating on a serious level
then the coach had us test out the three moves we would be doing in the trial class WOD
i loved this because i learned that proper burpee form involves your chest actually hitting the floor – not something i was honestly ever aware of
hand release pushups
& box jumps
the coach recommended us trying different box heights to see which one we would be most comfortable with – that would challenge us yet we would be able to push through for the 12 minute WOD. i tested out a few and went with the 20 incher
after a few rounds of each – the coach handed us each a wipe board and showed us how to track our WOD progress during the session
then it was WOD time!
AMRAP in 12 minutes
- 10 box jumps
- 10 burpees
- 10 hand release push ups
each of us set up our stations, got our wipe boards ready and coach larry started the giant electronic flat screen clock above.
we were off! PHEW! it was hard! i didn’t expect 3 moves to be that challenging – i honestly felt super out of shape. the box jumps got easier as the rounds went on but to ensure proper form i did the pushups from my knees
i was just shy (2 pushups) of 5 rounds in 12 minutes
i was okay with this time – i wish i could have gotten more rounds in – but i definitely pushed myself the hardest i could go
after the session we had to beast out of there for the next class to start but larry informed us he would be emailing each of us for a follow-up and to see where are goals are with next steps.
my thoughts? i REALLY love the idea of crossfit – it’s challenging – focuses on strength & conditioning – i love the idea of working out with a group of people who have similar interests & i’m thinking of considering it!
i would be interested in doing the private fundamental training because my schedule doesn’t really work with the group but i’m looking forward to hearing back from Larry to see what my options are
could i be a crossfit convert? we’ll find out!
love to love you <3
have you ever tried crossfit? did you love/hate it?
