so i’m a food store snob. what are ya gonna do – right?
here’s the thing.
my go-to food store for weekly meal planning, shopping, etc is trader joe’s – it wasn’t always this way – before i discovered the three trader joe’s within 15 minutes driving distance from me – and the gloriousness of the products there – i used to be a pathmark, walbaums, stop & shop kind of girl
those food stores are ex-haust-ING.
i realized this weekend – well really just today – that i would rather weed through the crazy, unmanageable & hectic trader joe’s parking lots then drive to one of these large and in charge, way too many choices, crazy coupon clipping people giant supermarkets and do my shopping there
yes. i am a food store snob.
i dramatically thought “WHAT THE HELL am i going to do” when super storm sandy took out one of our local TJs for a couple of months
i mean “now there are only going to be two within driving distance – and that’s not mentioning the one in brooklyn that is 7 minute walking distance from my office”
but i just can’t – i just can’t handle the big food stores
too many choices, too many people, too many misleading prices, & compare this with that.
trader joe’s – so dependable, so easy.
i go in – i know what i want – i get it – occasionally throw something new in my cart – and hey i even get to enter a ‘bring your own bag’ raffle for a gift certificate there – which i happened to tell the friendly worker there today that some day i will win – i mean i’m there enough – doesn’t that get me bonus points?
i digress. i love trader joe’s. and i think to myself on a frequent basis – where in the world would i shop if it wasn’t for good old TJs.
and some how – some way – i’ve got it down to magic where i end up spending the same amount of money there every week. i don’t think i could do that elsewhere.
i bet you can’t get love cookies at waldbaums…
it’s looking like this valentines day it’s gonna be that box of cookies & me. but that’s a post for a different day – no?
breakfast this AM.
2 1/2 to 3 ingredient paleo pancake
- a tiny sweet potato i found sitting in my fridge that needed to be used (skin included)
- 3/4 cup canned pumpkin
- a heaping scoop of unsweetened coconut flakes
- 2 eggs & 2 egg whites
- more cinnamon & pumpkin pie spice than your bowl can handle
mix mix mix all of the ingredients together! don’t you dare leave out that skin – it’s one of the best parts of the pancake!
cook in a GIANT pancake shape on a skillet – probably about 5 minutes per side – be patient or your pancake will fall apart.
dress up to your desired likings
i was indecisive this morning so i went halfsies with coconut butter & halfsies with almond butter
for the record – i couldn’t feel my armpits for two days after thursday’s WOD
part 1: 20 minutes get to your 3-rep max of power cleans
i got to 3 reps with 75lbs – i’m struggling with these bitches like a mother effer! i can’t get a good jump shrug – advice is MUCH needed.
part 2: which left my armpits & chest on fire for 3 days
for time
- 50 pushups (hand release)
- 20 goblet squats (35lbs)
- 40 pushups
- 20 goblet squats
- 30 pushups
- 20 goblet squats
- 20 pushups
- 20 goblet squats
- 10 pushups
i finished up in 14:41 and i did my pushups on my knees (weaaaaaaaaaaaksauce –> i can’t do chest to the ground regular pushups yet!) and i used a 35lb kettlebell – this was a freaking KILLER workout – it doesn’t seem like it like oh pushups and squats – no problem – well thats 150 hand release pushups & 80 goblet squats. WAH.
as for the power cleans i’m still working on these – and still debating if i want to hit up open gym this afternoon at 4PM – you know – because of my box insecurities (right now it’s a debate between open gym & pedicures…)
i can’t believe it’s been a week since i’ve posted!
love to love you <3

Love you!!!! Happy weekend to you love! Send those cookies my way, since I am your valentine :)
ReplyDeleteI know...TJs is really awesome. I do go to a bigger grocery store for my regular shopping, but I got on Friday mornings firs thing...so its not so packed. And they have a starbucks inside it...win win. Happy weekend.
ReplyDeleteI would die without TJ's...ok, that's a bit extreme! I would be an unhappy lady without TJ's. Such awesome stuff for the price. Going to keep an eye out for those cookies on my trip there tomorrow. Enjoy your weekend!
ReplyDeleteI love TJ's... sadly, the closest one to me is 2.5 hours away! As far as the power cleans the best advice I can give is to start strong. You don't want your feet too wide, you want your toes forward, posterior chain engaged (no arched back), tight core. Once you start your pull, literally pull all the way at the top while making sure you are getting your body up AND under that bar. High shrug, fast elbows and you have a power clean! Keep working hard! To practice the shrug, use a PVC pipe or just the bar for sets of 10 making sure to keep the bar as close as possible to your body. In the words of Mike Burgener, "when the arms bend, the power ends." Pull, pull, pull and then snap those elbows up for the final catch. Good luck!
ReplyDeletethat's how i feel about our little health food store hear. I still drive to wholefoods too. And i'm still waiting on a TJ's. gah... jealous. First world problems.
ReplyDeleteI may have to steal that push up/goblet squat workout - it sounds intense!
ReplyDeleteI am SUCH a grocery store snob now. A few months ago we decided to randomly do our entire week's shopping at Whole Foods (it involves us getting a train out there and then walking 20 minutes with bags!) but since then I haven't been able to go back to the regular grocery store. The quality of the food is just so much nicer, and the whole shopping experience is way more fun at WF!
I am soo happy to be living within walking distance to a Trader Joe's. So many items are significantly cheaper there and the small store layout is key for quick and easy weekly shopping. Can I get a shout out for the samples too?
ReplyDeleteThat box of cookies makes me wanna go buy some....and trader joes is right by my gym :/ ha! I love that you do goblet squats thats one of my most favorite workout moves and whenever I bring it nobody seems to know what I'm talking about.. You go girl!! woo!
